Taipei Symphony Orchestra TSO
Founded in 1969, Taipei Symphony Orchestra has been honing its exceptional performance skills for over half a century. Our mission is to share the beauty of music with others and to represent the most beautiful sounds of Taipei. We use music to create dialogue and bring the sounds of Taiwan to the rest of the world.
TSO has always worked with prominent artists from around the world, including soprano Angela Gheorghiu, tenor Jonas Kaufmann, violinists Pinchas Zukerman, Christian Tetzlaff and Maxim Vengerov, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist Sabine Meyer, and composers Tan Dun, Alexandre Desplat and Nico Muhly. Over the years, TSO has welcomed such renowned conductors as Felix Chiu-Sen Chen, Andras Ligeti and Gilbert Varga, who have led TSO to the pinnacle of musical art.
From 2019 to 2022, the internationally renowned Eliahu Inbal served as Principal Conductor, and since 2023 he has held the title of Conductor Laureate, bringing to the orchestra profound musical interpretations and an expansive international perspective. In 2026, distinguished German conductor Alexander Liebreich assumed the role of Chief Conductor to lead TSO into a new chapter of artistic achievement.
Since TSO launched the Taipei Music Festival in 1979, the TSO repertoire has grown to include 48 opera productions, which have received great attention, and TSO opera has become a must-see event for opera-lovers, while also playing a vital role in the development of Western opera in Taiwan.
In addition to performances at home, TSO regularly tours in more than 40 cities across the world. In this way, the orchestra has taken on the role of musical ambassador, representing Taipei City to promote cultural diplomacy, and is committed to cultivating younger generations of musicians and enhancing public appreciation of music.
The affiliated group TSO Youth was founded with the mission of promoting music and holding high-quality musical education activities on campus and in communities. School Concerts designed for fifth grade students and Community Concerts are two major events that are well loved by Taipei students and citizens.
TSO unites a distinguished ensemble of refined and accomplished musicians, driven by an unwavering pursuit of artistic excellence. Building on the success of its 2021 and 2023 releases of live recordings of symphonic masterpieces by Beethoven, Bruckner, and Brahms made under the baton of Maestro Eliahu Inbal, TSO will be reaching a new international milestone in 2026 with the release of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Recorded through a cross-border collaboration, this album brings TSO’s powerful musical voice to audiences worldwide and marks a bold step onto the global stage of classical music.
The Taipei Concert Hall and Library, which is currently under construction, will be TSO’s future home. With our depth of experience and musical accomplishment for over half a century, we believe TSO can bring the audience the greatest listening experiences by combining virtuoso musical performance with digital technology, innovation and forward-thinking.
