Youngest First Prize Winner of the Menuhin Violin Competition
A rising star who fuses fresh charm with refined artistry
Laureate Conductor Eliahu Inbal × Violin Prodigy Christian Li × TSO
Presenting Saint-Saëns’ Brilliant and Elegant Violin Concerto Masterpiece
While composing his Symphony No. 4, Dmitri Shostakovich faced severe political condemnation due to his perceived ideological stance. Under immense pressure, he withdrew the work before it could be premiered. It would take 25 years—and a shift in the political climate—before this symphonic masterpiece finally received its long-overdue debut.
The Fourth Symphony encapsulates the core elements of Shostakovich’s musical voice: the unmistakable influence of Mahler, daring orchestration, and a sonic tapestry unlike any other. Scored for over 120 musicians, this monumental and visionary work explodes with raw power and invention—a bold and unmissable gateway into the world of Shostakovich.
At the age of just 10, Christian Li became the youngest ever First Prize Winner of the Menuhin International Violin Competition. In 2020, he signed with Decca Records, becoming the youngest artist in the label’s century-long history. Within three years, he released two critically acclaimed albums and was hailed by reviewers as a "brilliant rising star."
Since his competition victory, Christian has been in high demand internationally. In 2022, he was named a Young Artist Partner of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, performing a series of notable concerts. He currently performs on the legendary 1737 “Paulsen” Guarneri del Gesù violin, paired with a 19th-century bow by French maker François Nicolas Voirin.
In this concert, Christian joins Laureate Conductor Eliahu Inbal and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra to perform Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, a work rich in lyrical lines, colorful harmonies, and radiant orchestral textures—an enduring gem of the Romantic violin repertoire.
