With delicate strokes and vibrant color, Ravel composed his Sonata for Violin and Cello as a refined yet vivid dialogue between two instruments. He later dedicated the work to the late Claude Debussy, in gratitude for the path Debussy had paved in music.
Debussy began his String Quartet in G minor at the age of 31, during a time when Symbolism reigned in the arts. A frequent guest in artistic salons, Debussy absorbed the era’s aesthetic of sensual mystery and shadowed nuance, resulting in a quartet that shimmers with light and breathes with airy elegance.
In 1842, after an intensive study of Classical masters, Robert Schumann experienced a burst of inspiration that led to several chamber works—including the brilliant Piano Quintet in E-flat major. Premiered with his wife Clara Schumann at the piano, the piece received high praise from both Clara and Richard Wagner, who admired its compositional ingenuity.
Through three luminous gems of 19th- and 20th-century French and German chamber music, TSO Artist-in-Residence Steven Lin joins an exceptional group of international soloists to interpret works of dreamy depth and imagination. We invite you to take a seat and become a guest of this summer’s musical reverie.
