Presenting Tchaikovsky’s Classic: Variations on a Rococo Theme
The towering figure of late Romanticism, Anton Bruckner, passed away having completed only three movements and a sketch of the finale of his Symphony No. 9. In the decades since, numerous composers and scholars have dedicated themselves to reconstructing the missing fourth movement in hopes of honoring Bruckner’s final artistic vision.
Laureate Conductor Eliahu Inbal believes that even without the finale, Bruckner’s Ninth remains one of the greatest symphonies from the 19th to early 20th century. Yet he also acknowledges that audiences may be curious about the symphony’s potential “complete” form. For this performance with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Inbal presents the latest and most refined reconstruction of the fourth movement—an effort by musicologists Nicola Samale, John A. Phillips, Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs, and Giuseppe Mazzuca. This version offers a rare opportunity to explore the monumental scope of a masterpiece that Bruckner left unfinished—a final chapter reborn through careful scholarship and reverent artistry.
Li-Wei Qin, winner of the Silver Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition and First Prize at the Naumburg International Cello Competition, has been praised for his "artistry, superb technique, refined musicianship, and heartfelt interpretation.” Often compared to legends such as Yo-Yo Ma and Jian Wang, Qin is one of the most prominent Asian cellists on the international stage.
For this performance, he joins Eliahu Inbal and the TSO, performing on a precious 1780 Guadagnini cello. Together, they present Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme—a brilliant, Mozart-inspired showpiece, interpreted by Qin with elegance, charm, and virtuosic flair.
